About me

At Matt O'Connell Counselling, my goal is simple: to help you understand yourself better, so you can feel more like yourself and handle life’s challenges with confidence.

I'm Matt – a 55-year-old counsellor with a degree in psychology, a diploma of counselling, and a real passion for supporting others. Over the past five years, I’ve worked closely with people facing addiction and mental health issues. That experience led me to focus on what I care about most: offering one-on-one counselling for men.

My approach is warm, genuine, and down-to-earth. I aim to create a safe, supportive space where you can talk freely, make sense of things, and discover your own answers. I believe that when we truly understand ourselves, we can make meaningful changes and live more fulfilling lives.

Testimonials

“Since starting counselling with Matt I have gained a deeper understanding of myself and have made significant positive changes in my life. I highly recommend his services.”

Frequently Asked Questions

What is Mental Health?

Mental health is a state of wellbeing in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively, and take pleasure and satisfaction from life.

If this isn't you right now, and you would like it to be, then I can help. Click here to check availability.

How long are counselling sessions?

Counselling sessions typically last 60 minutes. Click here to check availability.

Is my information kept confidential?

This is a safe space. Confidentiality and privacy is a top priority. This is one of the key reasons to seek a professional counsellor. We are professionally bound to keep your identity private, and whatever is said between us confidential (similar to doctor-patient confidentiality). I take this very seriously. Your information will not be shared without your consent. This aspect and any limitations will be discussed in more detail in our first meeting.

Do you offer online counselling sessions?

Yes, I offer both in-person and online counselling sessions to accommodate different preferences and needs. Initial sessions are typically conducted in-person. Subsequent sessions may be made online by arrangement.

How much will it cost me?

Standard Session Fees:

- Standard Counselling Session (60 minutes): $150

- Bulk Rate (3 sessions pre-paid): $390 ($130/session)

Concession Fees:

- Concession Standard Session (healthcare/concession card): $110

- Concession Bulk Rate (3 sessions pre-paid): $270 ($90/session)

- Initial sessions are available in-person only. Subsequent online sessions may be made by arrangement.

Can I get a Medicare discount?

No, Medicare generally does not cover private counselling service providers like mine.

However, Medicare subsidised services like a psychologist or psychiatrist are not necessarily cheaper. To access a limited number of this type of session, you will first need to book a visit with your GP to register under a "Mental Health Care Plan". Then you'll need to book sessions with a psychologist or psychiatrist. The cost of these sessions is generally much higher ($250+), with the Medicare rebate only covering part of the fee (currently $96.65) and usually running out after 6 sessions.

How do I know if counselling is right for me?

You'll never be wasting your time, or mine, by having a session with me. We are all climbing our own personal mountain. Sometimes it can be a difficult climb, and talking to someone who is a good listener can often help. Usually the best solution is already within you, and I can help you see it.

What makes Matt the expert?

When it comes to your life, I'm definitely not the expert. You are!

But I am trained in helping you find the best solutions to your problems.

In terms of qualifications, I hold a BSc. degree (Psych) from the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, and a Diploma of Counselling from Australian Institute of Professional Counsellors. I am also a level 2 member of the Australian Counsellors Association.

For the past 5 years I have been working in WA's south-west with people diagnosed with various mental health diagnoses.

What's the best first step?

I understand that it can be hard taking the first step. It's a leap of faith, isnt it?

There are two options. You can just go ahead and book a session by clicking "book now" or scrolling to the calander the bottom of this page and choosing a date and time that suits you. (There's an option to write a note to me when making your booking).

Or Click on the "Contact" link and write a message directly to my email that I will reply to within 24 hours.
